Iguanas
live in tropical climates and spend a large part of their day just
sunning themselves. They have a small gland located just behind
their head on the top of their neck that is their ultraviolet light
gauge - it tells them when then need sunlight and when they've had
enough. Lack of natural sunlight is the basic cause of MBD. This
is not a tropical area and the iguanas just do not get enough sunlight.
Diet also plays an important role in MBD.
The combination
of a diet that is lacking in calcium and a deficiency in sunlight
causes the iguanas body to look for a source of calcium and it takes
it from its own bones. The bones become soft and fracture easily.
Hypocalcemia
also affects the nervous system and can cause tremors and weakness.
This disease is the most common disease of iguanas and is a preventable
disease.
The most recent
literature on MBD recommends three ultraviolet lights, although
others may be good; Vita light, Chroma 50, or Color tone 50. One
of these lights should be combined with a black light and placed
within two feet of the floor of the enclosure with no glass or plastic
interference. The best source of light is sunlight - take advantage
of it while it's here.
The Animal Health
Clinic recommends annual wellness visits for all Iguanas. If you
